2024 Picnic for Nature – Bombo Headland

Bombo Headland on the Kiama coast is a haven for birds and animals, transformed by local planting with native rainforest and coastal species over the last 30 years.

Join us at this special place on Saturday 19 October to celebrate the annual NCC Picnic for Nature, a wonderful way to reconnect with nature and each other.

We’ll start at 12pm with a guided nature walk around the site with horticulturist Carl Glaister. Carl and Bob King founded Bombo Headland Landcare in 1988. Carl will explain how they started with the Swamp Oak Casuarina glauca around a natural watercourse gully, and have since planted many Cabbage Tree Palms Livistona australis, figs and lilly pillies, and 1000s more local native trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers. The important environmental restoration is ongoing and the site is a popular site for school groups to help with plantings.

October 14-20 is the annual Aussie Bird Count, and for those who want to take part in this long-running citizen science project, you can help us monitor the site on the day. Please read the information about requirements, and let us know when you register if you will be taking part.

After the walk we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch. BYO picnic spread and we’ll provide some treats. We aim to be plastic free, of course. Bring your picnic rug or fold up chairs to spread out in the shade of some magnificent figs. You can join us at any time in the afternoon.

Swimming or snorkeling in the sheltered waters of the Boneyard is optional!

Kids are welcome, and encouraged to attend.
