UOW Pulse students at NTD 2024.
Landcare Illawarra was delighted to host UOW Pulse student volunteers for National Tree Day this year.
With generous support from Planet Ark’s Seedling Bank, plants were sourced from local nurseries, and the students were able to plant trees, shrubs and grasses at Curry’s Mount Estate overlooking Rose Valley and Gerringong. Landcare Illawarra is supporting revegetation of the critically endangered subtropical rainforest on the site.
The student come for two days, and had an amazing experience beyond just planting. On the first day they learnt about the original subtropical rainforest that once covered the valley and the importance of revegetation, before they prepared the site and had a tour of the beautiful Curry’s Mountain Estate property and the finger lime (Citrus australasica) plantation.
They returned for a planting day on 29 July and powered through the planting, mulching and watering on the prepared site. Plants included species that are common in Illawarra subtropical rainforest such as Whalebone Tree (Streblus brunonianus), Illawarra Plum Pine (Podocarpus elatus), Red-fruited Olive-plum (Elaeodendron australe), Oliver’s Sassafras (Cinnamomum oliveri) and White Aspen (Acronychia oblongifolia).
A huge thank you to all the students, and to Phoebe Eldridge-Smith at UOW Pulse for organising the students. We hope to see them back for another National Tree Day to see the results of their hard work.

Community events were held across the Illawarra for National Tree Day over the weekend of 27 and 28 July. Some events were postponed because of wet weather. There are still two events to be held this weekend.
