History
The Landcare group formed in 2015 to restore the rainforest species under one of the figs and create an edible forest of local Illawarra and regional native plants under the other. The site’s proximity to the Kiama Community Garden prompted the creation of a living, growing expression of the link between biodiversity (the rainforest) and food security (the community garden). Members of the Landcare group also work in garden’s nursery that supplies plants to Landcare.
Work plan
The Landcare group is restoring the rainforest species under one of the figs and creating an edible forest of local Illawarra and regional native plants under the other. The Hillside is an opportunity to show off some of the wonderful plants of the Illawarra. Also, by using these local plant species, habitat is created for local fauna.
Worst weed!
As a site in town, we have all usual garden escapes on site but Turkey Rhubarb is currently the most annoying.
Favourite plant and why
The magnificent figs that motivated us to transform the site.
Where to find the group
We meet at Kiama Community Garden, Cavalier Park, Kiama. 9.30am on the fourth Saturday of the month.
