The plan is to slowly expand the Littoral Rainforest and encourage natural regenerating with weed management. We work from the best habitat out and improve the habitat we have.

Group of people

Location
Working at the Minnamurra Headland Reserve. Some of it is Crown Land and some managed by Kiama Council.

History
The group was formed in 2020, during the first COVID lock down, by the local residents in Carson Place and Robinson Avenue, Minnamurra. The site was a working farm over 40 years ago and was completely cleared. Council had started planting over the last 30 years.

Work plan
The plan is to slowly expand the Littoral Rainforest and encourage natural regenerating with weed management. We work from the best habitat out and improve the habitat we have.

Worst weed!
Where there is no canopy cover, Kikuyu inhibits new plantings, so we don’t tackle it. Asparagus Fern is increasing on site and Coastal Morning Glory, Madeira Vine and Turkey Rhubarb all need to be managed.

Favourite plant and why
Controversial! Maybe the Illawarra Flame Tree closely followed by the Cabbage Tree Palm. But we love all the resilient and hardy rainforest species like Whalebone Streblus brunonianus.

Where to find the group

We meet to the south of the boatramp off James Oates Reserve. 10am on the third Saturday of the month.
