Why this project matters

The 21km Kiama Coast Walk is one of the region’s most popular outdoor attractions, connecting parks, reserves, and beaches that serve as vital recreational spaces for walking, cycling, and enjoying the natural beauty of the coast.

Before European settlement, these areas were home to rich and diverse ecological communities, including Littoral Rainforest, Bangalay Sand Forest, and Themeda Grassland. These ecosystems provided habitat for native wildlife and held deep cultural significance for First Nations people, as seen in the many Aboriginal shell middens found along the coastline.

Over time, extensive clearing for agriculture, industry, and urban development has fragmented and degraded these habitats. Today, invasive weeds from agricultural activity, garden escapes, and illegal dumping pose significant threats to the remaining native vegetation.

That’s why five dedicated Landcare groups have been working to restore and protect the coastal environment—removing invasive species, planting native vegetation, and reconnecting these important ecological patches to support biodiversity.
