A special opportunity to visit private land on the Illawarra escarpment.

Landcare Illawarra has a long-standing partnership with the owners of the ‘Old Corrimal Colliery’, below Brokers’ Nose at Tarrawanna, beneath the Illawarra escarpment.
High-quality forest vegetation is extensive along the escarpment and extends down through the old colliery site. The vegetation includes Tall Eucalypt/Turpentine Forest and Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest.
Under the previous Illawarra Woodland and Rainforest Project, which ran from 2012 to 2018, the new landowners have worked with Landcare Illawarra and Conservation Volunteers Australia to protect and enhance the endangered ecological community, Illawarra Subtropical Rainforest.
The property has experienced significant disturbance from more than a century of mining and industrial activity, and has extensive weed infestations of garden escapees and exotic plants introduced to the site, including Lantana, Moth Vine, Madeira Vine, Wild Tobacco and Cape Ivy. The owners have been on a long journey to rehabilitate the site and continue to face numerous challenges, most recently from feral deer and mountain bike trails.
Join landholder, John Reay and Landcare Illawarra Chair, Emma Rooksby for a guided walk around part of the site. You’ll learn about the history of the site, the regeneration techniques being used to rehabilitate some of the property, and see the progress made so far.
Walk grade: Grade 5 under the Australian Walking Track Grading System. The site is steep, and the track is slippery, rough and unformed in some places.
Bring: Covered walking shoes, long pants and sleeves, and sun protection. Morning tea included, and please bring your own water and snacks if needed.
