On the 23rd of April from 9am Hillside Native Food Forest Landcare will be hosting a community tree planting day in Kiama. Situated next to the Kiama Community Garden, in the heart of Kiama, new areas will be planted with local Illawarra plants that are attractive to native butterflies, bees and birds.

The new areas will provide habitat for pollinators and complement the native food forest, assist with pollination of crops growing in the community garden, and assist with pollinating the plantings we have been doing since 2011.
“The site is really coming along!” Explains group coordinator Joe Carter.
It’s a fantastic place the community can come and learn more about native bush foods and Illawarra native plants which provide habitat for lots of different wildlife in our region.

We have built and put in nest boxes with the assistance of the Kiama Venturers, Office of Environment and Heritage and Kiama Municipal Council, volunteers from Conservation Volunteers Australia, Kiama Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh participants as well as our regular Landcarers have contributed significantly to removing weeds, planting trees and shrubs, and moving mulch around the site.

This is the next stage in building a wonderful natural community asset, and we would love more volunteers to come along and learn more about what we are doing and get their hands dirty for a day.”

Morning tea will be at the Kiama Community Garden, people are encouraged to bring a plate to share with tea and coffee provided by the volunteers. Guests will be most welcome to look around the wonderful community garden. The native bee hive is a special treat.

Where to meet: Park in the Kiama Leisure Centre Car Park on Havilah Place, walk onto the ovals and head east (left) along the fence until you see the flags. You can also enter from the Thompson St gate to the sporting fields.

Please wear sturdy shoes/boots, and sun smart clothing. Bring gloves and a hat. We will provide tools, but if you have a favourite, bring it by all means.
